Kernel Hearts Brings Chaos to Heaven
Some games only need a few seconds of footage to make you stop and ask, “Wait, what exactly is going on here?” Kernel Hearts, released on September 17, is exactly that kind of game. Four android magical girls, a post-apocalyptic world covered in ash, strange Angels, and the Tower of Babel leading straight into Heaven — all wrapped inside an action roguelite with one remarkably ambitious goal: climb to the top and dethrone God. It already sounds wild, and that sheer weirdness is exactly what makes the game so difficult to ignore at first glance.
Kernel Hearts Always Tempts You to Push a Little Further Up the Tower
If Hades turns every failure into another step forward, while Risk of Rain 2 thrives on larger 3D stages, co-op, and builds that gradually spiral out of control, Kernel Hearts seems to sit somewhere between those two experiences. It still uses meta-progression to make each expedition meaningful, but moving through its areas, choosing encounters, and hunting for rewards feels closer to a more open 3D roguelite structure. What separates it from those familiar formulas is the very distinctive world Ephemera Games builds around them: magical-girl anime, religious imagery, and a post-apocalyptic setting inspired by Patagonia all sharing the same space.
Fernet, Spika, Laika, and Dolce are not there simply to complete the visual package either. The four members of M.A.H.O.U differ enough in animation, speed, movement, and combat rhythm that switching characters can noticeably change how a run feels. Some are faster and more agile, others rely on heavier attacks, while another can make combat feel almost like a performance. It is a smart choice for a roguelite: instead of only asking “which build is strongest?”, the game also encourages you to figure out which magical girl actually suits the way you want to play.
Each expedition is built around several layers of choice:
- Mementos and Relics constantly create opportunities to push your build in different directions.
- MAHOU.OS provides long-term progression between expeditions.
- Heavenly Curse creates moments where your magical girl can unleash a major burst of power.
- Encounters and rewards give you control over what you want to pursue during a run.
- The Sin meter creates time pressure, forcing you to choose between moving forward or gambling on one more upgrade.
That last system gives Kernel Hearts an especially interesting layer of tension. Once a build starts coming together, walking away from a nearby reward becomes surprisingly difficult. When the next Memento could turn an average run into something memorable, the decision between pushing ahead and risking another encounter suddenly matters much more. The game understands the “just one more” mentality that makes roguelites so addictive, and with online co-op for up to four players, those decisions can easily turn into chaotic moments that are much harder to reproduce when playing solo.
Combat, however, is where Kernel Hearts has yet to earn the same level of agreement. Post-launch reactions are fairly divided: some players enjoy the combat rhythm, bosses, and the way builds evolve during a run, while others feel that dodge timing, hit feedback, enemy durability, and the pace of progression still lack the smoothness they were hoping for.
This is also where comparisons with established names become more revealing. Hades is known for tight combat and immediate feedback, while Risk of Rain 2 can turn item accumulation into dramatic jumps in power. Kernel Hearts plays with similar ideas, but it does not always deliver the same level of satisfaction just yet.
Fortunately, combat is not the only thing holding the experience together. Even among reactions that are not entirely positive, several aspects are repeatedly highlighted as strengths:
- The character designs of the four M.A.H.O.U members.
- The soundtrack and overall atmosphere.
- A visual identity that blends anime with a post-apocalyptic setting.
- Angel designs that are both beautiful and unsettling.
- Religious symbolism mixed with Japanese influences and distinct Argentine touches.
Together, those elements give Kernel Hearts a look that is difficult to mistake for something else. Magical girls stand out against landscapes that feel almost completely dead, religious symbols collide with bright anime aesthetics, and the Argentine influence prevents the world from feeling like just another familiar “anime-inspired” setting. It is also one of the reasons the game remains so easy to be curious about even when its combat has not convinced everyone.
For now, Kernel Hearts is most appealing because of the personality created by all of these elements together rather than any single system. It may not be the smoothest action roguelite around, but it is strange enough to make you wonder what the Tower is hiding on the next floor, varied enough to make you want to try another character, and flexible enough for each expedition to take a different direction depending on the build you create.
For a roguelite, sometimes getting players to finish one run and immediately start thinking about the next is already an important victory. Visit the game's official website for more details, and don't forget to check out our price comparison platform to buy Kernel Hearts with the cheapest price.
