Helldivers 2 requires Steam players to create a PSN account

It's not a good day at Helldivers headquarters. Through an official Steam post and an announcement on X (formerly Twitter), Steam players must connect their Steam account with a PlayStation Network account to continue playing Helldivers 2 on PC. Arrowhead Game Studios announced this condition on day one, but the developer temporarily removed the requirements due to technical issues at the game's launch. But now, at Sony's request, the requirement has returned, and this news has been met with a lot of backlash from fans.

Helldivers 2 is a premium live-service game phenomenon. Like Palworld, the game did not come with a $70 price tag, which may have boosted sales. But what kept players always coming back to Helldivers 2 was the game's quality and enjoyment. However, the idiom "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" applies here. Although many may say creating a PSN account is an easy workaround, the situation is not as simple as it seems. Many countries don't allow creating a PSN account, which implies that those playing Helldivers 2 through Steam in these countries will lose access to the game. Furthermore, although the official message emphasizes safety and security, unfortunately, the PlayStation Network is no stranger to hacker attacks, which means that this security is not as iron-clad as Sony would like.

Others still comment that they do not have a PlayStation, have no interest in creating a PlayStation account, and will not make one. Since they will lose access to the game, the only alternative is to file for a refund. This shows that, despite Arrowhead Game Studios' warning about this requirement from the start, it would be best to remove it altogether. As of now, neither Arrowhead Game Studios nor Sony has responded to the negative feedback.
