How to Fish Is Losing Players Fast, but Is That Really a Problem?

How To Fish player count drops, but isn't that normal?
Updates & Patches Industry

How to Fish became one of Steam's biggest surprises of 2026, but its extraordinary launch momentum is already fading. The multiplayer fishing game attracted hundreds of thousands of players during its viral breakout, yet SteamDB's latest numbers show that most of that audience has now moved on.

According to SteamDB, How to Fish reached an impressive all-time peak of 373,971 concurrent players on August 26. That figure transformed the quirky indie title into one of Steam's biggest games almost overnight. However, the situation looks very different today. The game is currently attracting roughly 27,000 concurrent players, while its 24-hour peak sits around 59,500. That's a very significant decline from its record, although maintaining tens of thousands of players is still a strong result for an indie multiplayer game.

Are the latest How to Fish updates enough?

Developer Dazed Games has been keeping the game updated since launch, primarily with patches focused on bug fixes, balance changes and quality-of-life improvements. The latest major update added Steam Cloud support, adjusted several gameplay elements and fixed various multiplayer and performance problems. Those improvements are important, but they don't necessarily give existing players a reason to return. Fixing a problem is very different from adding something that makes players want to start another session. That's where the long-term future of How to Fish becomes less certain.

The game's explosive popularity was largely driven by its simple concept and unpredictable multiplayer chaos. Fishing with friends, unlocking increasingly ridiculous equipment and discovering bizarre interactions made How to Fish perfect for streams, clips and word-of-mouth recommendations. However, novelty has a shelf life. Once players have explored the available islands, unlocked equipment and defeated the bosses, there may not be enough new content to keep them coming back regularly. Unlike a traditional live-service game, How to Fish doesn't currently have an endless progression system or a constant flow of seasonal content.

That doesn't make the game unsuccessful. In fact, How to Fish may simply be following the natural lifecycle of a viral multiplayer hit: players arrive in huge numbers, have fun with friends, exhaust the available content and move on until there's something new to discover.

New content could decide How to Fish's future

This makes the upcoming content updates particularly important. New islands, fish, bosses and equipment could bring former players back, but entirely new mechanics would be even more valuable. The biggest challenge for Dazed Games isn't necessarily keeping 300,000 players online. It's finding ways to make players who have already experienced the initial experience think, "I need to play this again."

For now, the How to Fish player count remains healthy despite the enormous drop from its SteamDB record. The launch phenomenon is clearly over, but the game is far from dead. The next major content updates will reveal whether How to Fish was simply Steam's latest viral obsession or the beginning of a multiplayer fishing game with genuine long-term staying power.
