AMA and Transparency: Larian Studios Tackles AI Controversy

Larian Studios responds to AI concerns in Divinity development

Larian Studios, the Belgian developer behind Divinity and Baldur's Gate 3, has pledged to address growing concerns over its use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) in game development. The announcement comes after a wave of criticism from fans worried that AI could compromise creative integrity.

Is it really that bad?

The controversy intensified earlier this month following remarks by CEO Swen Vincke, which many interpreted as signaling a broader reliance on AI within Larian's development process. While the company has consistently stated that AI will not appear in the final game, some players expressed alarm that its use, even behind the scenes, might undermine traditional creative workflows and ethical standards in the industry.

In response, Larian has confirmed plans to hold an "Ask Me Anything" (AMA) session, offering fans a chance to interact directly with the development team. Representatives from multiple departments, including design, narrative, art, and technology, will participate. Vincke emphasized that the session aims to provide transparency about how AI is used and to give players a forum to ask questions about the studio's processes.

This controversy has gained special relevance as it happens in the aftermath of the announcement of Larian's new game at The Game Awards 2025. With a spectacular video, the mystery generated by the mysterious statue that was revealed days before the event, and a a huge community that loves BG3, the hype for Destiny is through the roof. However, expectations are out of the charts too, even more after Vincke promised that the game will redefine turn-based combat in the franchise.

Larian's leadership has sought to reassure both fans and employees that AI usage is limited to specific, non-final stages such as concept ideation, internal communication, and early-stage references. The studio stressed that all final artwork, writing, and voice performances are created by human staff, highlighting that no positions have been cut or replaced by AI-generated content.

"The tools we use are there to inspire, not replace our team," Vincke said in a social media statement. "Original creativity remains the core of everything we produce. AI acts more like a research assistant or reference library than a creator." This clarification comes amid industry-wide debates about the role of AI in creative work, particularly regarding its potential impact on artists, writers, and voice actors.

Internal discussions at Larian have also reflected the complexity of AI integration. An associate producer noted concerns about even minor AI-generated lines, pointing out that small roles in games often serve as crucial opportunities for emerging voice talent. Such insights underscore the studio's careful approach to balancing innovation with respect for human contributors.

Fan reactions have been mixed. While some praise Larian's transparency and measured use of AI, others remain skeptical, viewing any reliance on generative tools as a potential risk to creative authenticity. The upcoming AMA is expected to clarify the studio's policies and demonstrate how Larian plans to maintain its commitment to human artistry.

Larian's handling of the AI debate may set a precedent for the wider gaming industry. The implementation of IA in the development of video games is controversial. While it can potentilly become a useful tool to speed-up some work, the abuse could generate lower quality games and potentially make people lose their jobs. Fortunately, creativity is something that seems out of reach for the almighty IA, and many players are raising their voices against the extensive use of these kind of tools. Surely, Larian won't want to risk all the renown achieved with its previous work just to release a game earlier. In any case, we will have to wait to know more.
