Larian Studios has confirmed that it will not use generative artificial intelligence tools in the development of its next game in the Divinity series, reversing an earlier stance after widespread criticism from players and industry observers. The decision follows days of intense discussion about the role of AI in creative work and reflects the studio's effort to clearly distance its flagship role-playing franchise from generative AI-driven content.

Controversy over the use of AI is the trend

The controversy began after the announcement of Divinity with comments from Larian CEO and creative director Swen Vincke suggested that the studio had been experimenting with generative AI during development. According to Vincke, these experiments were limited to internal use, such as early concept exploration and placeholder material, and were never intended to replace artists or appear in the final game. Despite these assurances, the remarks triggered backlash from fans who viewed any use of generative AI as incompatible with Larian's reputation for handcrafted worlds and storytelling.

Concerns raised by the community centered on several issues, including the ethics of AI training data, the potential erosion of artistic authorship, and fears that even limited experimentation could normalize AI use in creative roles traditionally filled by human developers. These criticisms gained significant traction across social media and forums, prompting Larian to address the matter directly.

 

 

During a recent Reddit “Ask Me Anything” session, Vincke clarified the studio's position and announced a clear policy shift. He stated that Divinity will feature no generative AI-created art and that Larian will not rely on generative AI tools even at the concept art stage. The goal, he explained, is to remove any ambiguity about the origin of the game's visuals and ensure that all creative assets are unquestionably the work of human artists.

Larian’s writing leadership echoed this stance with regard to narrative content. The studio confirmed that generative AI will not be used for dialogue, lore, quests, or other written material. According to the team, internal tests showed that AI-generated text failed to meet Larian's quality standards and provided little practical benefit compared to traditional writing workflows.

While the studio has drawn a firm line around creative content, it has not ruled out the use of AI technologies altogether. Vincke noted that Larian remains open to exploring non-generative or non-creative applications of AI, such as technical optimization or support tools, provided they are ethically sourced and do not replace creative labor.

The decision places Larian among a growing number of developers reassessing how generative AI fits into game production. As debates continue across the industry, the studio's move signals a prioritization of transparency and artistic integrity, particularly for a series as closely associated with deep narrative design and bespoke world-building as Divinity. No release window has been announced for the next entry, but Larian’s message to fans is clear: the game's art and story will be created by people, not algorithms.
