Bungie gives Marathon more PvE content as PvP fatigue keeps growing

Marathon Season 2 adds PvE and players have waited for this shift
Updates & Patches

Marathon is making a pretty big turn with Season 2, and honestly, it feels like Bungie may have finally noticed something players have been saying for a while now: not everyone wants every match to feel like a ranked tournament where a random squad teabags your body after deleting you in three seconds. There is a massive crowd sitting out there waiting for more PvE content, not just in Marathon but also in games like ARC Raiders. A lot of players still love tension and challenge, but they want it against the world, not against someone screaming in voice chat after camping an extraction point.

PvP still has a place, no question about that. But online gaming in 2026 can be rough. Matchmaking gets sweaty, metas get figured out in a few days, and every lobby starts feeling like players are auditioning for esports teams. Some people just want to log in after work, squad up with friends, shoot stuff, grab loot, and have a good time without turning every session into a stress test.

That is where Marathon Season 2 starts getting interesting.

Season 2, called NIGHTFALL, is bringing a lot more than a few balance tweaks. Bungie is adding experimental modes that push more toward PvE experiences. One mode still mixes PvE and PvP lightly, while another later in the season goes full PvE, letting crews complete objectives and progress together across multiple runs. That alone could end up being huge if players latch onto it.

Season 2 looks like a bigger shift than expected

Outside of the PvE additions, Season 2 also brings Night Marsh, a darker version of Dire Marsh, alongside a new Runner shell called Sentinel, progression updates through the Cradle system, more weapons, mods, contracts, and quality-of-life fixes. Duos are coming back too, plus improvements to matchmaking and progression systems.

The interesting part is Bungie even admitting Marathon needed changes. That says a lot.

Now the big question becomes simple: was PvE the missing piece all along?
