Modern Warfare 4: Release Date, Platforms, Editions & All We Know

The upcoming release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on October 23, 2026, is bringing a new campaign, competitive multiplayer, and the return of DMZ-style extraction gameplay to PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. Developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision, MW4 is a standalone release, meaning players must purchase the game separately as it will not be available via Game Pass at launch.

Release Date and Platforms (Confirmed)

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 officially launches on Friday, October 23, 2026. Activision confirmed the release date in its May 28 announcement, with the game arriving simultaneously across the current-generation console and PC platforms, alongside a dedicated Nintendo Switch 2 version.

The confirmed platforms are:

• PlayStation 5

• Xbox Series X|S

• PC: Steam, Battle.net, and Xbox on PC

• Nintendo Switch 2

There will be no PlayStation 4 or Xbox One version. The game has been designed for current-generation hardware, while the Nintendo Switch 2 edition has been developed natively in partnership with Digital Legends.

Two early-access periods have preceded the full launch. Campaign Early Access began on October 16, giving eligible players an opportunity to experience the story ahead of release. Editions and Prices

MW4 is available in Standard and Vault editions. The Standard Edition is offered digitally across supported platforms and physically on consoles. The Vault Edition is the premium option for players who want additional in-game content alongside the base game.

Standard Edition

The Standard Edition provides access to the full game. Console players can purchase the corresponding Cross-Gen version where offered, while PC players can choose from the supported digital storefronts.

Vault Edition

According to the official information and the campaign showcase, it takes place against the backdrop of a North Korean invasion of the Korean Peninsula. Activision's announcement describes a story in which the consequences of the invasion spread beyond the battlefield, bringing established characters and ongoing storylines into a new crisis. 

Multiplayer: Classic Progression and Prestige

Competitive multiplayer returns with a plethora of maps and fan-favorite gameplay modes. The game also introduces a new progression system that gives players choices over how they approach long-term advancement. DMZ: Extraction Operations in Hajin

Game Pass, PS4 and Xbox One: What Is Not Available?

Not every player will be able to access MW4 through their existing subscription or hardware. Activision's October 15 update clarified two important limitations ahead of launch.

Is MW4 on Game Pass?

No. MW4 will not be available on Game Pass at launch. Players must purchase the game separately to play it from October 23. Activision has stated that MW4 is expected to join Game Pass in Holiday 2027. That is a future availability window, not a launch-day benefit, and its timing remains subject to change. 

Is MW4 Coming to PS4 or Xbox One?

No. MW4 does not have versions for PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. Its confirmed console releases are for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, alongside PC and Nintendo Switch 2. Owners of older consoles will need access to a supported platform to play the new installment.
