Steam’s GPU crown changes hands again, with RTX 3060 back on top

RTX 5070 loses its lead as RTX 3060 makes a stunning Steam survey comeback

Valve has published its October 2026 Steam Hardware Survey, and the latest results have reversed several surprising trends from the previous month. The GeForce RTX 3060 is back at the top of the GPU rankings, 16GB of RAM has reclaimed its lead over 32GB, and Linux is once again approaching a 4% share of surveyed systems.

Steam's monthly hardware survey offers a useful snapshot of the PC gaming community, particularly given the platform's estimated 150–200 million or more monthly active users. However, its figures should not be treated as a precise census. Participants are selected randomly and must opt in, while changes in the composition of the sample can produce substantial fluctuations between monthly reports.

The GPU rankings illustrate this problem particularly well. The RTX 3060 returned to first place in October after briefly losing its crown to the RTX 5070 in September. On the default combined-platform table, the older card now holds a 3.62% share, up from 3.54%. Meanwhile, the RTX 5070 dropped from 5.86% to 3.56%, losing 2.30 percentage points in a single month.

The separate PC GPU table tells a similar story, although the two cards are effectively tied. Both account for 3.78% of surveyed systems, with the RTX 3060 listed first. The RTX 5070 recorded an even larger 2.37-point decline on this chart.

A possible explanation comes from China's National Day Golden Week, which ran from October 1 to 7. As one Reddit user noted, the timing coincides with a 9.41% drop in the share of participants using Simplified Chinese. Since the survey is an opt-in sample rather than a weighted representation of Steam's entire user base, changes in regional participation can significantly affect the rankings. September's apparent surge in RTX 50-series mid-range GPUs may therefore have been driven partly by increased participation from Chinese users rather than a sudden shift in global hardware adoption.

Other categories also saw notable changes. Intel increased its share of Windows CPUs by 0.89 percentage points to 53.48%, while AMD slipped to 46.51%. Valve's Steam Frame also appears in the VR headset results with a 4.13% share, up 3.72 points. However, only 1.75% of all surveyed users reported owning a VR headset, limiting its impact on the overall figures. The Meta Quest 3 remains the leading headset at 27.27%.
