Petroglyph Games, the team responsible for the likes of Star Wars: Empire at War and EA's upcoming Command & Conquer remasters, brings you this fast-paced strategy-survival game set in the barbaric world of Conan the Barbarian. Unconquered, which is set within Conan's Black Colossus storyline, features a lot more simulation than in its previous games. There are a lot of resources to deal with (food, gold, wood, and iron for instance), and the layers of strategic complexity come from prioritizing which you'll gather around the procedurally generated map in order to fuel different areas of expansion, all while struggling against environmental challenges and those ever-worsening enemy waves.

Players must build up a stronghold and expand their army, there's the constant threat of environmental challenges - such as disease, sandstorms, and fire - alongside marauding enemy forces, which attack in massive, progressively more difficult, waves. Manage your resources, research new technologies to advance your defenses, and recruit an ever-growing army to unlock hero units, such as Conan himself, which have special abilities. Your army is made up of foot soldiers at first, but eventually, you'll get heavy cavalry, sorcerers and other powerful forces. You have to train your units and keep them fed and paid in order for them to grow. You can build housing, temples, and barracks, among other units. Defensive options include oil cauldrons.

You can choose to play the game entirely alone in single-player, but Conan Unconquered can also be played as a two-player co-op (where participants are able to manage separate elements but must fend off considerably more difficult challenges). The enemy hordes will keep coming at you and how long you can resist the invasion depends entirely on your ability to build your stronghold and lead your army. Gameplay is real-time but can be paused to issue commands and start construction of new buildings at any time. Battles will be bloody and savage with players having to deal with anything from fires raging through their stronghold to piles of corpses spreading death and disease.
