New Onimusha: Way of the Sword Trailer Brings Horror to Life

Capcom unveils terrifying new Onimusha: Way of the Sword trailer

Capcom has dropped a chilling new look at Onimusha: Way of the Sword with the third official trailer, ominously titled "The Genma Experiments." Revealed during Gamescom 2025, the footage delves deeper into the supernatural horrors lurking beneath Edo-period Kyoto and highlights both new enemies and refined combat mechanics that fans can expect when the series makes its long-awaited return.

A peek into darkness

At the heart of the trailer is the introduction of Dokyo, a mysterious antagonist who appears to be conducting grotesque experiments deep within a hidden laboratory. His twisted creations include the Greater Nue, a monstrous hybrid that channels devastating lightning strikes; the Kogashira, once-human victims transformed by Genma parasites into toxic abominations; and the nightmarish Chijiko, a mass of writhing faces and tentacles that looks pulled straight from a fever dream. These creatures serve as both grotesque set pieces and fearsome obstacles, underscoring Capcom's commitment to pushing the series' darker fantasy elements further than ever before.

The trailer also highlights the mechanical depth that will define combat. Musashi's repertoire includes a range of precision-based abilities, ranging from deflecting enemy strikes, even projectiles, to perfectly timed parries that can stagger foes and create brutal counterattack openings. Players can also unleash the Blazing State by chaining successful parries, gaining a temporary surge in offensive power while harvesting Blue Souls to fuel supernatural abilities. Classic series mechanics return as well, including Soul Absorption for healing and upgrades, and the iconic Issen, a lethal, high-risk counter that rewards split-second timing with devastating results.

Set against the backdrop of Kyoto during the Edo era, Onimusha: Way of the Sword casts players as legendary samurai Miyamoto Musashi, who wields the cursed Oni Gauntlet despite his disdain for its power. The story promises a blend of historical intrigue and supernatural menace, while the environments showcase the RE Engine’s ability to deliver eerie atmospheres and gruesome detail,  including dismemberment and blood-soaked combat flourishes. However, the tone of the game sets it apart making it significantly different from other games it reminisces, like Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. While undeniably steeped in horror, early hands-on impressions describe its combat flow as surprisingly playful and stylish, with a flair reminiscent of Platinum Games' high-octane action titles. Rather than leaning into the punishing weight of a Soulslike, Onimusha: Way of the Sword seems to favor speed, spectacle, and an almost anime-like exaggeration that gives each encounter a sense of cinematic flair.

Slated for release in 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, Onimusha: Way of the Sword looks to balance reverence for the series’ roots with bold new directions. The latest trailer cements the impression that Capcom is not merely reviving the franchise but reimagining it, with grotesque enemies, a layered combat system, and a stylish edge that could draw in both longtime fans and newcomers alike.
