Over 1,000 NPCs, marriage and more: Fable is going all in

The wait for Fable is nearly over. The game launches on February 23, 2027, and everything we’ve seen so far makes it look like one of the most ambitious RPGs coming next year. It’s not just about exploring Albion, fighting enemies and completing quests — Playground Games is also putting a huge amount of focus on making the world feel alive and giving players plenty of freedom in how they live inside it.

A big part of that is Fable’s “Living Population.” Albion will feature more than 1,000 handcrafted NPCs, each with their own personality, home, job and daily routine. These aren’t just characters placed around towns to make the streets look busy either. You’ll actually be able to interact with them and build different kinds of relationships over time.

You can make friends, create enemies, hire people, start romances and even get married. Every adult NPC can potentially become someone important in your character’s life, which opens the door to a lot of unexpected situations depending on how you choose to play.

Your reputation will also affect the way people see and react to you. Be helpful and heroic and you may become one of Albion’s most respected citizens. Cause trouble everywhere you go and people probably won’t be quite as happy to see you walking into town.

That combination of exploration, combat, relationships and player choice is what makes Fable so interesting. Instead of simply giving us another open-world RPG, it looks like Playground Games wants Albion to feel like a place where we can actually build our own ridiculous fantasy life — and that is exactly the kind of Fable experience we’ve been waiting for.

Of course, a world packed with persistent characters and modern visuals comes with a price: your PC needs to be ready. Playground Games has revealed a detailed hardware chart covering everything from 1080p at 30 FPS to 4K at 60 FPS.
