Final Fantasy XVI director says future Final Fantasy titles may release on PC simultaneously with consoles

The release date for the PC version of Final Fantasy XVI has finally been confirmed for September 17, 2024, after a long wait by gamers. The PC port will launch alongside the two DLCs, The Echoes of the Fallen and The Rising Tide, which were previously released on PS5.

The fact that Final Fantasy XVI is coming to PC after a long period of PS5 exclusivity is not surprising to gamers, given the precedent set by previous Square Enix titles like Final Fantasy VII Remake. However, the director of Final Fantasy XVI unexpectedly shared some exciting news for PC gamers, saying that it is "very likely" that future Final Fantasy titles will be released on PC from day one.

In an interview with GamesRadar+, Hiroshi Takai, the director of Final Fantasy XVI, was asked whether future Final Fantasy titles might launch on PC on the same day as other platforms. He responded, "I think it's possible – probably even likely," but quickly added, "That said, the team in charge of each project gets to decide its own policy, so this is just my personal opinion."

Over the past year, Square Enix has been very open about its shift in company policy. Earlier this year, Square Enix announced that it would be "aggressively pursue a multiplatform strategy that includes Nintendo platforms, PlayStation, Xbox, and PCs", and mentioned that its future titles would no longer be exclusive to any particular platform, aiming instead to "create an environment where more customers can enjoy their works."

Square Enix seems to be implementing this strategy, starting with Final Fantasy XVI and extending to its future titles. If Final Fantasy XVI achieves outstanding success on the PC platform, it is highly likely that future Final Fantasy titles will be released on PC simultaneously with other platforms.
