Bethesda has rolled out Update 1.2 for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, currently available through the Steam beta branch. This update addresses a wide range of issues, including player feedback on difficulty progression, game stability, and graphical glitches, making it one of the most comprehensive patches to date for the remaster.
One of the standout additions is a brand-new difficulty setting called Journeyman, which bridges the gap between the Adept and Expert modes. Players had long criticized the jump in difficulty as too steep, and in response, the devs added a much-needed middle ground. The update also introduces granular sliders for adjusting both player and enemy combat damage, allowing for deeper customization of the game's challenge curve.
Beyond gameplay balance, this patch delivers substantial performance and stability improvements. Players will notice fewer frame-rate drops and world stutters, especially in areas like Bravil Castle, Deepscorn Hollow, and Skingrad. Optimizations to lighting, water rendering, weather effects, and particle systems have also been implemented, along with fixes for XeSS-related shadow flickering.
The update includes a broad array of bug fixes, many of which resolve longstanding visual and UI issues. These range from disappearing map markers and incorrect menu scaling to broken keybindings and spellcrafting soft-locks. Character animations—particularly for Khajiit and Argonians—have been improved, resolving issues such as tail clipping and armor misalignment. Fast travel delays, dialogue camera glitches, and crash triggers related to spellcasting and autosaves have also been addressed.
While Update 1.2 is currently exclusive to the Steam beta, Bethesda has confirmed that full deployment across Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and the Microsoft Store is in the works. With this patch, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered takes a significant step closer to offering the polished experience fans expect from a modern re-release of a classic.
