Helldivers 2 limits server population due to its excessive growth

Helldivers 2 is the best example of a game falling victim to its success. The game is now viral and the influx of new players is causing problems to Arrowhead Game Studios. The concurrent player count in the game exponentially increased to unprecedented numbers during the last weekend. More than 300,000 players were fighting for Super Earth on PC via Steam, which is double the amount that joined the fight on the launch weekend. The real number of players in Helldivers 2 is much bigger, as the title is also available on PlayStation 5 and it features crossplay. Such a success has surpassed all the expectations from the developers and it caused some issues.

Concurrent player cap

The amount of players trying to play Helldivers 2 last weekend was so high that the servers couldn't handle it. In an attempt to offer a proper experience to the players, Arrowhead Game Studios decided to limit the number of players to achieve server stability.

"Earlier tonight we had server-related issues with a concurrent player spike. This led to some mission payouts failing, some players being kicked to their ships, or being logged out. Our team is working around the clock to solve these issues. While we've been able to mitigate some of the causes, we are still struggling to keep up with the scaling that is needed to accommodate all our Helldivers."

"Therefore we've had to cap our concurrent players to around 450,000 to further improve server stability. We will continue to work with our partners to get the ceiling raised. If you have progression-related issues, please restart the game in order for things to sync back up. Thank you for your continued patience."

The success of Helldivers 2 has probably caught Sony off guard too. The number of concurrent players in the game is bigger than all the other PlayStation games released on PC combined. The publisher has stated recently that it will begin a more aggressive release strategy on PC, therefore it's quite likely that Helldivers 2 could mark the end of PlayStation-exclusive releases.
