Plague Tale: Innocence is a dark story following the lives of young Amicia and her little brother Hugo. It’s a heart-wrenching journey during the darkest time of human history. Plague Tale: Innocence is developed by Asobo Studio and published by Focus Home Interactive.

Game Information

Plague Tale: Innocence is set in the year 1349 when France was taken over by the Hundred Years’ War and the Great Plague. Players follow the lives of the siblings Amicia and Hugo while they join other kids as they run away from the Inquisition soldiers. Their experience is next to impossible to bear as they try to live in a dirty environment infested with rats . Amicia and Hugo must trust each other to survive; they will have to fight and find their purpose amid their dire circumstances. They witness the struggle and horror of their surroundings and with the good days gone, so is their innocence.

Gameplay

Players will face a series of survival puzzles and will look for ways to scare the hungry rats away. Rats fear fire and won’t enter within a radius of burning torches and braziers. Players take control of Amicia; she uses a sling and throws rocks to break drawbridge chains and stun guards. She also creates special ammunition and supplies including fire-starting sulfur stones. Hugo can be directed towards specific tasks when Amicia is busy.

If you are inherently scared of rats, then this game will drain the blood out of you. Make sure you can stomach the terrible stench that you can almost smell from your screen.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

: How does the effectiveness of igniting a light source impact the behavior of the rats?
The rats are repelled by light, but the duration and radius of the light source directly influence the safe zone. A stronger or longer-lasting light source will create a larger safe area, allowing for more strategic movement.; Can the rats be directly manipulated to attack specific enemies, and if so, how?
Yes, by using alchemical mixtures like 'Ignifer' to ignite flammable objects near enemies, or by luring them into areas with flammable substances, you can direct the rat swarms for offensive purposes.; What is the significance of crafting various types of ammunition, specifically regarding the rats?
Crafting ammunition such as 'Exstinguis' allows you to put out light sources, thereby unleashing the rat swarms. This is essential for clearing paths, creating diversions, or ambushing enemies.; How does the use of 'Odoris' impact the rats, and what strategic advantages does it provide?
Odoris attracts the rats to a specific location, effectively creating a distraction. This allows you to bypass enemies, lure them into traps, or create temporary safe zones by drawing rats away from an area.; Besides light, what other environmental factors can be used to influence the behavior of the rat swarms?
Besides light, the game incorporates elements like flammable objects and specific pathways to control the rats. Igniting hay carts or strategically positioning lights is crucial.; Is there a limit to how many rats can be present in a given area, and does their density affect gameplay?
Yes, the number of rats is limited by the game engine's capabilities and the specific level design. The density of rats affects visibility, movement speed, and the overall sense of dread.; Can you directly command the rats, or do you influence them indirectly?
You cannot directly command the rats. Instead, you influence their behavior through light manipulation, environmental interaction, and the use of alchemical tools.; How does the 'Exstinguis' ability interact with environmental lights compared to held light sources?
'Exstinguis' is designed to extinguish environmental lights such as torches or braziers, while your held light source provides a personal safe zone. Extinguishing environmental lights releases the rats, changing the environment.; Are there specific enemy types immune or highly resistant to the rat swarms, and how does this affect your strategy?
Yes, some enemies may wear protective gear or possess abilities that make them resistant to the rats. This forces you to be more strategic, utilizing other methods such as stealth or direct combat.; What is the role of stealth in relation to the rats, and how do you use it to navigate rat-infested areas?
Stealth allows you to avoid detection and strategically position yourself, using the rats to your advantage. You must avoid making noise and use light and crafted items to control the rats and clear paths.

A Plague Tale: Innocence is a very good game that can be completed in about 10 to 15 hours. The story is engaging, and Amicia and Hugo's narrative works well, with a particularly successful atmosphere that gives the adventure a real identity. The art direction contributes greatly to the immersion, especially thanks to the environments and the game's dark atmosphere. The soundtrack is decent and adequately complements the different moments of the story. The main weakness lies in the gameplay, which remains quite linear and offers little freedom in how you approach situations. The stealth sections can also become repetitive over time. Despite this, the experience remains enjoyable, driven primarily by its story and world.

A simply exceptional game, able to immerse the player totally in the story. An intriguing storyline and a graphics engine at the limit of photorealism make it, in my opinion, a masterpiece. Straconsigliato!
