Prepare to fight for your life in the depths of a haunted forest in Darkwood, a top-down survival horror game where you must somehow live through supernatural events while living in a cabin in the woods.

Darkwood will not hold your hand or explain its own tale. You will not have a map, instead learning how to navigate and handle the threats of the wood as you go. During the daytime, you must explore, scavenge, trade with a merchant, build a workshop, and craft items. When you travel into the woods, you must be wary as random events occur that will test your skill and nerve. At night, you may have to barricade your doors, set up traps, and hide as horrific monsters attempt to breach your defenses.

You will meet a roster of twisted characters who will impact your journey. Be careful whom you trust—the Woods make villains of everyone.  Make choices that will determine how the story will end and see how it plays out. Can you survive the nightmare that is Darkwood and find your way out?

    FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

How does the 'permadeath' mechanic influence resource management, considering the limited inventory slots and the crafting system?
Permadeath forces players to prioritize essential items for survival, such as healing and light sources, and to carefully consider the trade-offs of carrying materials for crafting versus potentially life-saving supplies, since death means complete inventory loss.
In what ways does the darkness mechanic impact combat encounters, and how can players mitigate its effects beyond just using light sources?
Darkness amplifies enemy aggression and introduces visual limitations. Players can mitigate this through cautious movement, using sound to detect enemies, and understanding enemy attack patterns, since direct confrontation in the dark is very risky.
How does the day/night cycle affect the behavior of both the player and the enemies, and what strategic considerations does it introduce?
Enemies are more active and aggressive at night, while the player's vision is severely restricted. This forces players to either stay in safe zones during the night or plan nighttime excursions very carefully, prioritizing stealth and light.
What is the role of 'Hideouts' and how do players customize them to improve their chances of survival?
Hideouts provide a safe haven for crafting, storing items, and resting. Players customize them by constructing defenses like barricades, upgrading furniture for improved crafting efficiency, and placing light sources to combat the darkness.
How does the crafting system interact with the limited resources and inventory space to create a sense of scarcity and strategic decision-making?
Crafting recipes require specific, often scarce, materials, and items take up valuable inventory slots. Players must carefully choose what to craft, balancing immediate needs with long-term survival, and considering the cost of carrying the materials.
Beyond simple combat, what types of environmental challenges and puzzles do players encounter, and how do these test their resourcefulness?
Players face environmental hazards like traps, limited visibility, and dangerous terrain, requiring them to use their environment to their advantage, like using sound to detect threats or utilizing objects for cover.
How do dialogue choices and interactions with NPCs influence the story progression and the player's access to resources or opportunities?
Conversations with NPCs can unlock quests, provide information, offer trades, or even lead to hostile encounters. Choices can affect the player's reputation and access to vital resources and tools, impacting their survival chances.
What is the significance of 'Reputation' in Darkwood, and how does it influence interactions with other survivors or factions?
Reputation impacts how NPCs react to the player. Actions like helping, stealing, or killing influence standing. High reputation may unlock helpful services, while low reputation could lead to hostility and limited access to resources.
How does the 'sound' mechanic function, and how can players utilize it to both detect threats and avoid detection?
Sound is crucial for both the player and enemies. Players can hear approaching enemies, but also make sounds that attract them. Strategic use of the environment, such as avoiding running on noisy surfaces, is vital for stealth and survival.
How does the sanity mechanic influence gameplay, and what specific behaviors or events are triggered by its decline?
As sanity decreases, players experience visual and auditory hallucinations, making it harder to distinguish between real threats and illusions. Low sanity can also influence enemy encounters and trigger specific events or traps.
