Anno 117: Pax Romana marks a new stage in the series, tackling one of the most emblematic periods in history. Blue byte succeeds in exploiting this setting with finesse, offering a city-builder as accessible as it is profound. The artistic direction impresses with its precision: cities, landscapes and animations create a vivid, credible picture. Management mechanics remain solid, with clear production chains that are sufficiently complex to satisfy seasoned players. Each province imposes its own constraints, forcing players to adapt their strategy rather than duplicate a single pattern. However, the game sometimes fails to surprise, with very few new features. Despite a lack of content compared to Anno 1800, the whole remains solid, coherent and very enjoyable to play. Anno 117 is a polished, immersive experience, perfectly in keeping with the spirit of the saga.

Anno 117 has become my go-to zen game. It may sound strange to say that about a strategy title, but there's something almost therapeutic about watching production lines fall into place, warehouses fill up and the population thrive. When everything finally flows, I relax by moving buildings, decorating squares or laying out new avenues. Even when problems arise, such as lack of goods or riots, they feel like interesting puzzles to solve, not frustrating punishments.

One of the things I value most is how the game makes you feel the weight of your decisions without punishing you unfairly. Leveling up certain population strata, betting on trade or self-sufficiency, expanding to new regions... everything has consequences that are slowly felt. That feeling that your Empire is sustained thanks to a complex network that you yourself have designed makes each achievement, no matter how small, very rewarding and encourages you to continue fine-tuning your strategy.

Visually, Anno 117 is a real spectacle. Zooming in and seeing the citizens carrying amphorae, working in the fields or strolling through the baths makes each game look like a living model of the Empire. There are moments when I stop time just to enjoy the view, looking at the details of the villas, temples and walls. This mix of beauty and urban order helps a lot to make me want to build cities that are not only efficient, but also elegant and coherent.

For me, the greatest strength of Anno 117 is its aesthetics. There is an almost obsessive care in every texture, every animation, every element of Roman architecture. The provinces are not only beautiful: they are believable, coherent and vivid. The warm colors of the Mediterranean contrast beautifully with the cooler tones of the northern regions. You feel a real distinct visual identity, as if each territory tells its own story. I spent a crazy amount of time in free camera mode observing the ports, the public squares, the farms, simply because everything breathes authenticity. This sense of detail transforms the experience into an interactive dashboard. Even without playing "effectively", one already feels transported to the Roman world.

goaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat What surprised me the most is how accessible Anno 117 feels without sacrificing depth. I started with almost no knowledge of the saga and, thanks to how it introduces the mechanics, I've ended up managing production chains, maritime trade and even legions without getting overwhelmed. The campaign mode has served as a sort of "crash course" on how to think like a Roman governor, and the free mode is where I really get lost for hours trying out different city configurations.

This is a good sequel to Anno 1800, still with that addictive mix of logistics, production and city-builder. I loved the new diagonal grid, the superb graphics (Albion is crazy) and the more varied islands, as well as the more natural building interactions. On the other hand, the production chains don't really add anything new, aqueducts awkwardly replace electricity, the progression in efficiency is less satisfying, the land armies didn't convince me, and the intro story seems cut too short.

Anno 117 has become my favorite management game for relaxing after work. I start a game, organize a few trade routes, upgrade a residential area, then simply sit back and watch the city come alive. The soundscape, the visual details and the steady pace create a truly immersive atmosphere. Even after several hours of play, I still feel like starting a new campaign with a different approach to my Empire.

Anno 117 succeeds with its Roman ambience, solid management and city-builder feel. A rather short campaign and a few technical issues. Otherwise, the game is a success for fans of management and the license.
