Prototype 2 is a third-person open-world action-adventure game set in a ruined version of New York City called New York Zero. The city is under military quarantine after a catastrophic viral outbreak, and society has collapsed into chaos, infection, and armed control zones.

The player assumes the role of Sergeant James Heller, a soldier who loses his family during the outbreak and becomes infected with the Blacklight virus. Rather than dying, he is transformed into a living weapon with the ability to reshape his body into deadly forms. Driven by revenge, Heller sets out to hunt down the person responsible for the disaster: Alex Mercer.

Gameplay revolves around extreme mobility and shapeshifting combat. Heller can sprint up buildings, leap across city blocks, glide through the air, and brutally dismantle enemies using organic weapons such as blades, tendrils, and claws. A core mechanic allows him to consume enemies, absorbing their appearance, memories, and biological traits to grow stronger and infiltrate hostile groups.

The open world is divided into heavily controlled zones, each with different levels of infection and military presence. Players are encouraged to freely explore, complete missions, and upgrade abilities through a deep mutation system that customizes combat style and movement.
