FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

: Can I build a fully functional mining operation on an asteroid that orbits a planet?
Yes, you can establish an automated mining base on an asteroid, complete with drills, refineries, welders, and assemblers. You can even set up a system to transport the refined resources back to a base on a planet.; How does the grid system work in Space Engineers, and what impact does it have on my creations?
Everything in Space Engineers is built on grids. These grids define the structural integrity and functional capabilities of your creations, whether they are a small rover or a massive space station. The grid system allows for modular construction and realistic physics-based interactions.; What is the difference between a large grid and a small grid, and what are their respective advantages?
Large grids are typically used for larger structures such as ships and stations, while small grids are used for smaller vehicles, tools, and components. Large grids can handle more complex systems and higher block counts, but small grids offer greater agility and are often preferred for detailed work.; How does oxygen management work in the game, and how does it affect survival in space?
Oxygen is a crucial resource for survival. You'll need to create and maintain oxygen generators, oxygen tanks, and pressurized environments. Without sufficient oxygen, your character will suffocate, making oxygen management essential for base building and exploration.; Can I create automated systems to control my base and vehicles?
Yes, Space Engineers features programmable blocks and sensors that allow you to create sophisticated automation systems. You can program your systems to control doors, lights, refineries, and much more. This automation is key to efficient resource management and base defense.; How does the welding and grinding mechanic work in the game, and what are their uses?
Welding is used to construct blocks and components, while grinding is used to disassemble them. Both actions require specific tools and resources. These mechanics are essential for building, repairing, and salvaging structures.; Can I design and build my own weapons and defenses for my ships and bases?
Yes, you can construct various weapons systems, including gatling guns, missile launchers, and interior turrets. You can also build defenses such as armor plating and shield generators to protect your creations from attacks. Turrets can be automated.; How does the power system work, and what are the primary sources of energy?
Power is essential to keep your creations functional. You can generate power using solar panels, wind turbines, and reactors. Reactors require uranium fuel, while solar panels and wind turbines generate power passively based on environmental conditions.; What is the role of refineries and assemblers in resource processing?
Refineries are used to process raw ore into usable ingots, while assemblers use ingots and components to create functional items, blocks, and components. These machines are critical for crafting, base building, and progression.; How does the game's physics engine influence building and combat?
The physics engine realistically simulates inertia, momentum, and collisions. This means that the design of your ships, the placement of thrusters, and the impact of weapons all play a crucial role in combat and maneuvering, which is a significant part of the gameplay experience.
