Mayday: The Survival Island joins the 2D comeback

2D is back, and Mayday: The Survival Island proves it

For a while, it felt like every big release had to chase photorealism. But look at what players have actually been hooked on lately: Hollow Knight: Silksong, Mina the Hollower, and a steady stream of pixel-art indies climbing the Steam charts. Clearly, 2D isn't "retro" anymore. It's just good game design without the fluff.

The latest one to wash ashore is Mayday: The Survival Island, which hit Steam on November 2. It comes from Pequi Studios, a three-person team from Goiânia, Brazil, and it's published by indie.io.

Mayday: The Survival Island Price & Launch Discount

The game launched with a standard price of $13.99. Right now, though, a 20% introductory discount drops it to $11.19 until November 16. In other words, if it's been sitting on your wishlist since the demo, now's the time to pull the trigger.

What Makes Mayday So Much Fun?

So, what's the deal? You wake up after a mysterious crash, hurt and alone on a remote island. From there, it's the survival loop we all know and love: gather resources, craft tools, hunt, fish, farm, cook and build your base. However, Mayday doesn't stop at keeping you fed. The island hides a lost civilization, magical totems and some seriously tough guardians, and the story comes together through symbols you spot while exploring, not quest markers yelling at you.

So what makes it stand out? First of all, all 24 islands were drawn by hand instead of being procedurally generated, and they range from swamps and beaches to cemeteries and ancient ruins. Even so, resource spots and island locations get shuffled on every run, so no two playthroughs feel the same. On top of that, you can brew potions, herd sheep and even drag buffalo back to your farm. Best of all, there are no forced objectives, so you play at your own pace. Early players seem to love it too, since the game launched with 89% positive reviews on Steam.

If you're looking for something to compare it to, Necesse is the obvious pick. It's also a top-down pixel-art survival game, but it leans into procedurally generated worlds, online co-op and building a whole settlement full of NPCs. In short, Necesse is a huge sandbox to share with your squad, while Mayday is a tighter, story-driven solo adventure with a mystery to crack.

Steam's launch deal is a solid starting point, but it's not the only store out there. So before you buy, use our price comparison tool to check every store and grab Mayday: The Survival Island at the lowest price. That way, you keep a few extra bucks for your next survival obsession.
