Square Enix recently reported a decline in net profit for 2024, largely due to the absence of high-performing titles, which prompted a shift in its strategic direction. While fans were expecting several big releases in 2025, they were met with disappointment following the unexpected cancellation of one of the year’s most anticipated games: Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link.
Despite the cancellation, Square Enix appears to be moving full speed ahead with a brand-new project. The company has just announced a new game in collaboration with TBS Games, a subsidiary of Japan's TBS television network.
As reported by Famitsu Japan, Square Enix and TBS Games are officially working together to develop a completely original IP. Job listings from Square Enix’s Japan studio are currently seeking a project manager and a server system engineer with experience in multiplayer online games—strongly suggesting that this new title could be an MMORPG.

This project comes at a crucial time for Square Enix. The company’s financial results for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2025, revealed a noticeable drop in net sales, mainly due to a lack of blockbuster releases. Square Enix continues to implement its three-year restructuring plan, which focuses on streamlining development operations, prioritizing quality over quantity, and shifting toward multi-platform game releases.
While details remain scarce, this new IP promises to blend the strengths of both companies—Square Enix’s deep expertise in game development and TBS’s storytelling and media background. For fans of Square Enix's iconic franchises, this new project is one worth watching closely in the coming months.
Regardless, Square Enix will need more major titles to regain its footing in the coming year. On that note, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth continues to perform exceptionally well, delivering strong numbers for the company—especially following its recent DLSS 4 support update.
