Firaxis is adding the most requested features to Civilization VII
After months of player feedback and heated debates online, Firaxis Games is giving Civilization VII fans exactly what they've been asking for: the ability to play with a single civilization from start to finish. This will mark a big shift away from the game's controversial "Ages" system, which forces players to swap civilizations as their empire progresses through Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern times.
Reshaping the game to appeal the fans
The Ages system was one of Civilization VII’s most significant changes. It's designed to keep gameplay fresh and prevent any one empire from snowballing too far ahead. However, for many veterans it felt like a betrayal of a core series tradition: the satisfaction of guiding a civilization across centuries and watching it evolve from a fledgling tribe to a world power. Reddit threads and forum discussions have been filled with frustration from players lamenting that their choices in one Age barely carried over to the next.
Firaxis is now testing a new mode that allows players to select a civilization and stick with it for the entirety of the game. The studio describes it as "one of the most requested features" since launch. The feature is being trialed through the "Firaxis Feature Workshop," an initiative that lets community members test in-development systems and provide feedback before they are rolled out publicly. The new option won't replace the Ages system entirely. Players will still be able to experience the original Age-based structure if they prefer, but those craving a more traditional Civilization journey will soon be able to maintain continuity with one civilization throughout their campaign. It's a move that acknowledges the community's desire for emotional investment, long-term strategy, and the feeling that every decision has lasting consequences.
This update is just one part of a broader rebalancing effort that also touches on the "Legacy Paths and Victories" system. While Firaxis hasn't announced an official release date for the single-civilization mode, they've confirmed that upcoming updates will be larger and more focused on testing major gameplay features. The next patch, version 1.3.0, expected in early November, will focus mainly on naval mechanics, but players can expect more news on the continuous-civ option soon.
For longtime fans, the ability to shepherd a civilization across the ages is more than a gameplay choice, it's a narrative journey. With this change, Firaxis is blending the best of old and new, giving players both freedom and the sense of legacy that has defined the franchise for decades. After all, Civilization VII may be too different in certain aspects from its predecessors, and this may have not contributed to making it very popular among the older fans of the series. In any case, Firaxis seems determined to "fix" the game, and that's always good news.
