Metal Gear Solid 3 remake officially announced

Snake really kept us waiting, but after months of rumors, it’s finally confirmed. During Sony’s recent PlayStation Showcase, Konami announced that the Metal Gear Solid 3 remake is on the way. Titled Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, the game is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam. Check out the teaser here, and note the return of the iconic MGS3 opening theme:

Snake is back

There is not a lot of information in the trailer—mostly it features the animals that you can eat in-game, and Snake stealthing through the jungle. Unfortunately, there’s no release date yet, but based on Konami’s website, Snake Eater will be a “faithful remake” of the PS2 classic. 

"Currently, the development team are working together to create an environment where fans can experience and enjoy the Metal Gear series on the latest platforms. We are working hard for Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater to be a faithful recreation of the original story and game design, while evolving the gameplay with stunning visuals and a seamless user experience.”

It's clear this will be a full remake, not a remaster. Konami also announced that Snake Eater will be “fully supported by Virtuos” a development company that has worked with them in previous Metal Gear games.

Despite being the third entry in the Metal Gear Solid franchise, Snake Eater is actually a prequel that follows the exploits of Big Boss before he was ever Big Boss. Codenamed Naked Snake, he must infiltrate a Russian lab to extract a rocket scientist, Nikolai Sokolov, who wishes to defect to the USA. As the mission evolves and more desperate measures are needed, Snake must survive by hunting and eating wild animals, stealthing his way through the jungle using camouflage and silence, and fighting powerful, specially-trained bosses using CQC techniques. That said, Konami’s remake raises more questions than it answers. How faithful a remake will it be, especially since the original director Hideo Kojima won’t be back to helm it? Will it still be campy, or take a more grounded approach? Will the political commentary still be there or will it be toned down? Will we still get to wear a Raiden mask to fool Colonel Volgin? Will there even be a Secret Theater filled with comedic outtakes? 

At least one thing is certain, though: the original cast, including David Hayter as Snake, will return for the remake.

That’s not all: Sony and Konami also announced that they will be re-releasing a bundle of the first three Metal Gear Solid games—MGS 1, 2, and 3. Titled Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1, it will be out later this Autumn.

“Simultaneously, we will deliver the Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection series, the most complete compilation that celebrates the 35th anniversary of the series. The Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection allows fans to play the games as they were, as first released on the latest platforms.”
