Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy Gets Positive Early Signals
After months of being presented as a new direction for the series, Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy officially launched on August 27 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. This time, Asobo Studio moves away from the stories of Amicia and Hugo, taking players 15 years into the past to follow Sophia on her journey across Minotaur’s Island. It also marks the first time the series has moved more strongly toward an action-adventure formula, combining combat, exploration, puzzles, and elements of mythology. After its first day, the early response suggests that this change in direction may have paid off.
Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy Shows Promising Signs After Launch
Even before release, Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy had already attracted attention thanks to the way Asobo Studio approached the new entry. Rather than simply repeating the familiar formula, the development team chose to build a more action-focused experience while also exploring the story of Sophia, a character previously introduced in A Plague Tale: Requiem. According to Asobo, this was a deliberate decision to break away from the formula established by the previous two games while still keeping A Plague Tale at the heart of the new world and story.
The information shared by the development team before launch also showed how much attention they were giving to Sophia’s character. This time, the story is not simply about a new adventure, but also looks back at her childhood and the experiences that shaped who she became at the age of 22. Asobo has explained that her journey will explore her past, the experiences that haunt her, and the choices that could change the course of her life.
When it comes to gameplay, the biggest change is the larger role of combat. Sophia can wield a sword, combine different abilities, and develop her playstyle through the Skills and Masteries systems. At the same time, exploration, puzzles, and familiar mechanics from the series remain part of the experience. This shows that Asobo has not completely abandoned the old formula, but is instead looking for a new balance between action and storytelling.
Following the game's official launch, the critical response has generally been positive, although some reviews have pointed out that the combat and certain puzzle mechanics are not particularly groundbreaking. The aspects receiving more praise include the story, characters, visuals, environment design, and the way the game blends adventure with action. Some reviews have even suggested that the change in formula does not cause the game to lose its A Plague Tale identity, while more cautious opinions see it as a solid experience that does not necessarily represent a major step forward in every area.
Players are also providing a fairly clear signal. At the time of checking, Steam lists the game as Very Positive, with 343 reviews and 94% of them positive. While that number is still small compared with a game that has been available for a long time, it is an encouraging start for a title that has only just passed its first day. Community feedback has also frequently highlighted the game's presentation, story, atmosphere, and variety in gameplay.
Of course, it is still far too early to say whether Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy will become a major long-term success. However, from Asobo's decision to refresh the formula before launch to the positive response emerging after release, the game is clearly off to a promising start. For those who enjoyed the world of A Plague Tale, or anyone looking for a story-driven adventure with a stronger focus on action, this may be a good time to take a closer look at Sophia's journey.
