Sony enhances PS5 Pro PSSR AI as Resident Evil Requiem adopts it first
Sony has revealed an enhanced version of its PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) technology, its AI-powered upscaling solution designed to improve image clarity. This upgraded version will be rolled out to all PlayStation 5 Pro consoles through an upcoming patch in the coming weeks, with Resident Evil Requiem set to be the first title to implement it.
The update is the result of Sony’s continued collaboration with AMD under Project Amethyst, a joint effort focused on advancing machine learning techniques for graphics rendering. The refined PSSR introduces a more sophisticated neural network and improved reconstruction methods. According to Sony, the model has benefited from roughly six additional months of development since the PS5 Pro’s release.

Here’s a comparison image of Grace's face in Resident Evil Requiem before and after the upgraded PSSR in effect. Finer details, such as hair, are reconstructed much more effectively, delivering a higher-quality presentation.
In a post on the PlayStation Blog, PS5 and PS5 Pro Lead Architect Mark Cerny noted that the current PSSR implementation has already enhanced over 50 PS5 Pro titles. Many of these games are expected to adopt the upgraded version beginning in March. PS5 Pro owners should watch for a March system update, which will introduce a new settings option labeled “Enhance PSSR Image Quality.” This feature will allow users to apply the improved AI upscaling to any compatible title that already supports PSSR.

Meanwhile, Resident Evil Requiem has launched to widespread critical praise, quickly becoming one of the most highly regarded mainline entries in the franchise in recent years. Developed and published by Capcom, the latest survival horror installment has earned review scores that rank among the strongest of the series’ modern releases.
The PlayStation 5 Pro is the console designed to deliver next-level immersion, improved clarity, and higher frame rates. This is evident with the upgraded PSSR upscaling, which makes games like Resident Evil Requiem look sharper and smoother than before, demonstrating PlayStation's commitment to pushing the boundaries of visual fidelity.
