Ubisoft gets into the NFT business
Despite the initial reticence from many actors in the video games panorama to delve into the NFT business, Ubisoft has announced the launch of its own platform. Quartz is going to be a new platform where players can acquire Digits, which will be the first Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) in an AAA game, since they will be implemented in Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint. This makes Ubisoft the first big AAA publisher to use NFTs in their games, and it opens the door to others doing it in the future.
Quartz announcement has had a mixed reception, as NFTs are not liked by many players now for several reasons. One of them is the energy consumption derived from them, but Ubisoft assures that its platform will run on energy-efficient technology that uses a million times less energy than a bitcoin transaction. Ubisoft has explained the reasons behind this decision:
"We chose Tezos because of its original Proof-of-Stake network and its leadership on clean NFTs. One transaction on their network uses the same amount of energy as streaming 30 seconds of video, while the previous generation of blockchain networks can consume the same energy required for one year of non-stop streaming."
Therefore, Ubisoft will start selling Digits in Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint. These will take the form of unique cosmetic items with a serial code that can be kept or sold to other people, but they keep the ownership history.
"Each Digit comes with a certificate of ownership stored on blockchain, a decentralised, community-driven technology independent from Ubisoft, which grants players more control than ever. With Digits, items are no longer bound to a player's game inventory since they can be put on sale for other eligible players to acquire on third-party platforms outside of the Ubisoft ecosystem."
When will Quartz be available?
Ubisoft considers this an experiment of sorts, and Quartz will only be available in a few countries when the beta launches tomorrow, including the USA, Canada, Brazil, France, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Germany, and Australia.
