FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

: What is the significance of 'Army Loyalty' and how can players prevent their generals from rebelling during extended campaigns?
Army Loyalty is a crucial mechanic that directly impacts a general's willingness to obey orders and can even lead to rebellion if it drops too low. Factors influencing loyalty include the general's traits (e.g., 'Good Commander' increases loyalty, 'Cruel' decreases it), the presence of family members within the army, the amount of loot and retinue they possess, and the success of recent battles. To maintain loyalty, players should ensure generals win battles, keep them away from high 'heat' regions for too long without successes, and occasionally assign them to govern cities or send family members to join their ranks. High loyalty prevents desertions and outright revolts, which can be disastrous.; Explain the 'Construction Queues' and 'Recruitment Queues' system in city management and their impact on expansion speed.
Cities in Rome: Total War operate with construction and recruitment queues. Players can only build one building or recruit one unit at a time per city. This means strategic planning is essential. Players must decide whether to prioritize economic buildings for long-term income, military structures for defense and offensive capability, or infrastructure like roads. The speed at which these queues complete depends on the city's level and available resources. Efficient management of these queues is vital for rapidly expanding your empire, reinforcing armies, and keeping pace with aggressive AI factions.; How do 'Truce' and 'Peace' treaties function in diplomacy, and what are the risks associated with breaking them?
Truce and peace treaties are formal agreements that dictate the relationship between factions. A truce typically lasts for a set number of turns, prohibiting warfare during that period. A peace treaty is indefinite until one faction breaks it. Both significantly impact diplomatic standing and trade. Breaking a treaty, especially a peace treaty, incurs a severe diplomatic penalty, making it harder to forge alliances and potentially turning neutral factions hostile. Players must carefully weigh the benefits of a surprise attack against the long-term diplomatic repercussions.; What are 'Chariot' and 'Elephant' units, and how do their unique abilities and vulnerabilities affect battlefield tactics?
Chariot and Elephant units are powerful, specialized military assets. Chariots excel at flanking maneuvers and causing mass panic among enemy infantry due to their speed and charging power. Elephants, particularly war elephants, are devastating in a charge, capable of breaking enemy formations and routing units with their sheer mass and terror effect. However, both are vulnerable. Chariots can be outmaneuvered or destroyed by well-placed spearmen. Elephants can be panicked by missile fire, turn on their own troops, or be effectively countered by spearmen and specific anti-cavalry units. Utilizing them effectively requires understanding their strengths and weaknesses, often in conjunction with other unit types.; Describe the 'Siege' mechanics, including the different types of siege equipment and their roles in reducing fortified cities.
Sieges are a critical aspect of Rome: Total War's gameplay. Players can attack fortified cities using various siege equipment. Ballistae and catapults are artillery pieces used to destroy walls, gates, and kill defenders from afar. Rams are used to breach gates, allowing infantry to storm the city. Siege towers allow infantry to scale walls directly. Onagers are heavy artillery that can bombard defenders and destroy buildings within the city. Defenders, in turn, can use boiling oil, rocks, and their own artillery to repel attackers. Successful sieges require careful selection and deployment of siege equipment, as well as coordinated infantry assaults.; How does the 'Morale' system influence the outcome of battles, and what actions can players take to break enemy morale or bolster their own troops?
Morale is a critical factor in Rome: Total War battles. Units with low morale are more likely to flee the battlefield, regardless of their remaining strength. Factors affecting morale include casualties taken, being flanked, witnessing friendly units routing, general's presence, and specific unit abilities. Players can bolster their own troops' morale by keeping generals nearby, engaging in successful charges, and flanking the enemy. Conversely, players can break enemy morale through heavy missile volleys, overwhelming charges, flanking maneuvers, and targeting units already wavering. A routed unit is effectively removed from the battle.; What are 'Naval Battles' like, and how do they differ from land engagements in terms of strategy and unit types?
Naval battles in Rome: Total War are distinct from land combat. Players command fleets of warships, and the objective is usually to destroy or capture enemy ships. Key mechanics include ramming, boarding actions, and using naval artillery. Different ship types have varying strengths in speed, armor, and firepower. Strategy involves positioning your fleet to gain advantages, using terrain (like coastal shallows or straits) to your benefit, and deciding when to engage in close-quarters boarding. Unlike land battles where unit formations and terrain are paramount, naval battles focus more on ship positioning, maneuverability, and the devastating impact of concentrated fire and boarding parties.
