Gearbox drops explosive Borderlands 4 story trailer

Gearbox has officially released the story trailer for Borderlands 4, giving fans a dramatic look at the series' bold new direction. With the introduction of a chilling new antagonist known as the Timekeeper and a fresh setting on the mysterious planet Kairos, the franchise looks set to evolve in ways both brutal and breathtaking.

Action to boot and a gazillion guns

The trailer opens with the Vault Hunters right after they land on Kairos, a planet previously hidden from galactic view. Captured almost immediately, they fall under the control of the Timekeeper, who enforces obedience with terrifying spinal implants called Bolts. These devices turn prisoners into loyal puppets of his regime, stripping them of free will and making escape nearly impossible.

The Timekeeper, voiced with unnerving calm, rules from his fortified base in Dominion City. Surrounded by the elite enforcers of the Order, he maintains a dystopian peace through fear and cybernetic domination. However, not all of Kairos bows to his will. A growing underground movement known as the Crimson Resistance has begun to rise, and at its chaotic heart is none other than the ever-erratic Claptrap, now reimagined as a freedom-fighting leader with questionable leadership skills. This rebellion sets the stage for the Vault Hunters to reclaim their agency and join the fight.

The trailer showcases the four new protagonists, including a Siren named Vex and a hardened soldier known as Rafa, each boasting unique abilities and class mechanics that expand the series' classic looter-shooter formula. Beloved characters from previous games return as well. Fan favorites like Mad Moxxi and Zane make appearances alongside newcomers. This fusion of old and new helps keep the narrative rooted in Borderlands lore while forging a fresh path.

Borderlands 4 will bring many novelties to the series in terms of story but also gameplay. Movement is faster and more fluid than ever, with double-jumping, gliding, dodging, and grappling all showcased in high-octane sequences. Combat appears to be even more chaotic, featuring giant mech bosses, industrial drill monsters, and an arsenal packed with ever-weirder guns. The loot system is also getting refined, promising a greater focus on rarity and build customization.

I like that normal weapons can be transformed by combining parts. Epic weapons that drop look even stronger than legendary weapons, which makes normal weapons even more exciting to use than before. The total number of skills per character has increased. Since the final skill you can acquire changes, it's even more fun to think about what kind of character you'll build. Moves have been added. You can now avoid more attacks instantly while walking, and it's easier to fight while falling with a glider than before. As for the main and secondary scenarios. it's probably a matter of personal preference, but it seems to me to be more serious, while the sub-scenarios seem to be more fun than before. I think this game is fine and balanced.

The trailer was a dream, selling the idea of a great Borderlands, very visual, fluid, with lots of content and fun. The game delivers on many of these promises, but not completely, as technical flaws weigh heavily. It's a bit of a "halfway house" between what we expected (on the trailer) and what we actually got - it's not catastrophic, but it's not beyond reproach either. The trailer sold a perfectly fluid and polished experience, and the fun is there, but marred by botched optimization.

Borderlands is back with even more weapons and over-the-top action. As usual, there will be 4 Vault Hunters playable in the base game and the cooperative mode supports up to 4 people. The gameplay seems to have been improved, with more fluid movements and many new traversal mechanics. I've played all the games in this franchise and I'll certainly want to play Borderlands 4 too, but I'll probably wait for a later edition with all the DLCs released and on sale.

All in all, this trailer shows that Borderlands 4 is looking to expand and enrich its formula. The game delivers on its mechanical, artistic and narrative promises. Gearbox has presented a good roadmap, and there's a real promise of post-launch richness and variety: story, new characters, free content, challenges and so on. If the promises are kept, the game could have a solid lifespan and satisfy both long-time fans and new players. With a few corrective patches and future content, it has the potential to become one of the best in the series.

The new Borderlands 4 trailer ups the ante: more visceral story, gritty characters and explosive aesthetics. Gearbox knows what it wants to convey: chaos and emotion. If the game maintains this narrative level, it can stand out beyond the technical section.

The gameplay is quite fun. The characters look great and are quite fun to play. I was glad to meet Claptrap again.One of the strong points are the new bosses that have received normal move sets, different phases and, at the higher difficulty level of the game, these bosses can be quite challenging.There is a more or less meaningful story (in relation to Borderlands 3).There is a lot of stuff to collect, but nothing earth-shattering. The open world is a bit empty,

The gameplay is a real delight, from the beginning we already have double jump, dodge, thruster to glide (this is achieved in one of the first missions) and the novelty, the hook with which to throw certain explosive objects to enemies, as well as hook ourselves to certain places in the environment. For its part the vehicles this time we can invoke them whenever we want and without the need to move to a "Motorizate" as before, which also gives more dynamism to navigation through the environment (something that is appreciated to have for the first time in the saga with an open world).
