Raji: An Ancient Epic Unveils New Gameplay Video

Announced in 2017, Raji: An Ancient Epic is an action-adventure game developed by Nodding Heads Games. The game is inspired by Indian culture, and more broadly by the art and mythology of Southeast Asia. The game was supposed to be released in 2019 on PC, Xbox One, PC and Nintendo Switch. Supported by Square Enix Collective and after a fundraising campaign via Kickstarter in November 2017, Raji: An Ancient Epic had remained quite discreet until then. But that does not matter since the studio recently unveiled a new video during the GDC 2019, in which we discover the gameplay of the game for the first time.

For those who have never heard of Raji: An Ancient Epic, this is an action-adventure game taking place in ancient India.

Thousands of years ago, a great war raged between the gods and the demons. The latter were defeated, and humans have lived in peace since then. But another war is about to break out because the demons are determined to take their revenge. During all these years of peace, humanity has been comfortable, living with a sense of security and they even have forgotten the ancient knowledge transmitted by the gods, leaving it vulnerable to demons. While the demons are returning, a girl named Raji has been blessed by the gods. After an attack on her city, Raji falls unconscious. After several days, she wakes up to discovers that her brother has disappeared and that she is endowed with divine powers. She will have to learn to control those powers to save her brother and to defeat the lord Mahabalasura who wishes to seize the human kingdom.

Raji: An Ancient Epic

Raji: An Ancient Epic offers varied gameplay, mixing fights, puzzles, and platforms, and it is reminiscent of a certain Prince of Persia. In the video above, we see Raji fighting with her weapon, the Trishul, which is actually the trident of Shiva in Hindu mythology. She obviously has magical powers, probably from the gods. The fights are fast and fluid, and we can observe several types of enemies. The Trishul will not be the only weapon of Raji. Indeed, she will have several weapons, and move from one to the other during the fights. The blessings of the gods will also play an important role since each god will grant different favors and powers to Raji and her weapons. Certain gods will give you the powers of an element, like fire, ice, lightning, earth or rage, allowing you to adopt your own style of play. Outside of the fighting, you will also encounter phases of platforms. In the video, you can see Raji hanging on ledges and climbing columns.

Puzzles and riddles will also await you in each of the levels, which are full of secrets to discover. We still know little about Raji: An Ancient Epic but it seems to be promising at least. In addition, the neat graphics and scenarios inspired by ancient Hindu architecture offer a sumptuous universe, all accompanied by a beautiful soundtrack.
