The Brutal Evolution from Doom Eternal to DOOM: The Dark Ages
The DOOM franchise has long been a foundation of the first-person shooter genre, delivering relentless action, visceral combat, and a signature blend of chaos and catharsis. With DOOM: The Dark Ages, set to release on May 15, 2025, id Software is once again redefining what it means to be the Doom Slayer. This prequel to DOOM and Doom Eternal takes the series in a bold new direction, trading the high-flying, frenetic pace of its predecessor for a heavier, more grounded experience steeped in a medieval-inspired hellscape.
Doom Eternal was a masterclass in speed and agility, often likened to piloting an F-22 fighter jet. Its combat demanded constant motion, dashing, double-jumping, and swinging across arenas filled with verticality and platforming puzzles. The Doom Slayer was a whirlwind of destruction, weaving through enemies with surgical precision and acrobatic flair. In contrast, DOOM: The Dark Ages reimagines the Slayer as a tank, heavy, powerful, and tireless. The developers at id Software have created the phrase "stand and fight" to encapsulate this shift, emphasizing a slower, more deliberate approach to combat that harkens back to the strafing gunplay of the original DOOM.
This change doesn’t mean the game lacks dynamism. Movement remains critical, but it’s less about soaring through the air and more about weaving through a barrage of slower-moving projectiles, much like the classic titles. The result is a combat loop that feels weightier and more brutal, perfectly complementing the game’s techno-medieval setting. Where Doom Eternal leaned into speed and complexity, The Dark Ages prioritizes raw power and strategic engagement, offering a refreshing counterpoint to its predecessor’s relentless pace.
Coming Back To The Roots
Doom Eternal expanded the series’ scope with vast levels and platforming challenges, but DOOM: The Dark Ages takes this ambition further with its largest campaign yet. Set in a dark fantasy world of ruined castles, ancient hellscapes, and demon-infested battlefields, the game blends linear combat zones with expansive, open areas that encourage exploration. Players can revisit cleared sections to uncover secrets, upgrades, and lore, a departure from Eternal’s more guided progression.
Adding to this scale are vehicle sequences that set The Dark Ages apart. Piloting a 30-story Atlan mech, players can slug it out with towering demons in kaiju-sized brawls, while riding a cybernetic, fire-breathing dragon introduces aerial combat and traversal. These moments punctuate the campaign with spectacle, contrasting with Doom Eternal’s focus on the Slayer’s personal agility. Though not the core of the experience, these features expand the Slayer’s power fantasy in ways Eternal never explored, grounding the game’s medieval roots in larger-than-life action.
DOOM: The Dark Ages isn’t just a step back from Doom Eternal’s breakneck speed; it’s a bold reinvention that marries the grounded brutality of the original DOOM with the innovation id Software has refined over decades. Use our price comparator to check out the best prices for DOOM: The Dark Ages.
