Spider-Man 2 will have separate and shared skill trees

After Insomniac released their 10-minute long gameplay trailer, more details are coming out about their eagerly-anticipated Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. The game will have a unique skill tree for its two playable characters, Peter Parker and Miles Morales. The game will also take the action outside of Manhattan and into the suburbs of Queens.

In case you missed it, here is the gameplay video for Spider-Man 2, which incidentally has racked up more than 20M views:

Action is his reward

According to Insomniac’s community manager Aaron Jason Espinoza, this is how the two skill trees will work:

"Between Peter's new Symbiote abilities and Miles' newfound blue bioelectric powers, each Spider-Man has their own unique set of skills that can be upgraded via an all-new individual skills tree. Our heroes share technology and train together, too, so we also included a shared Skill Tree that offers parallel upgrades for both."

Having a shared skill tree makes sense due to the mentor-apprentice relationship between Peter and Miles, and also because the two share information and technology between them.

At the same time, their unique power sets will require separate skill trees. For Miles, it would include area attacks and chain lightning. Meanwhile, Peter’s bond with the symbiote gives him augmented strength and black tentacles that he can use to grab and fling enemies as well as deflect bullets.

However, the symbiote suit is known to mentally affect its host. Wearing the black suit inevitably feeds on Spidey's anger, leading to uncontrolled aggression and violent behavior, as shown in various Spider-Man media:

This comes at an inopportune time as Spider-Man 2 will also feature a new host of headaches for the wall-crawling duo, including Black Cat, Wraith, Tombstone, The Lizard, and of course the two biggest baddies in town, Kraven the Hunter and Venom. Will we see a clash between Miles and his mentor before they inevitably team up? We’re going to have to wait and see.
