DOOM Eternal takes the series to new heights
Saying that DOOM is one of the most popular shooting series of all time would be a redundancy. Every DOOM game has been a success for one reason or another but all of them share certain features and a gameplay style that are quite appealing to the players. But the thing is that you have to innovate if you want to keep your game fresh and that is exactly what id Software is doing in DOOM Eternal. The game features plenty of novelties when it comes to weapons, enemies and gameplay mechanics while maintaining that flavor of brutal and fast-paced demon-slaying that has made the series so popular. The single-player campaign will pit you, playing as the DOOM Slayer, against hordes of demons. Expansive levels with multiple layers, constant pressure from the incoming enemies and multiple approaches to combat by using a huge arsenal of devastating weapons also contribute to its immersive gameplay, which will have your adrenaline pumping for a while.
But DOOM Eternal offers you more than its single-player campaign and you will also be able to engage in multiplayer battles, but here is when the big change comes: there won't be a Deathmatch mode in DOOM Eternal. That's right, the mode that made the franchise what is its today has been left out in this game, and as mind-boggling as it could be for some players, it seems that the developers had their reasons for it. According to Bethesda's Senior VP of Marketing and Communications Pete Hines, Deathmatch mode feels old and it doesn't fit in the game.
"The biggest problem we thought we had with Doom 2016 was that [multiplayer] wasn't done at id, and felt really disconnected from the base game that everybody loved... Whether you're playing by yourself or with others, we want it to feel like you're all playing the same game. That's as opposed to, ‘I'm a badass demon slayer in single-player, but when I go over to multiplayer, there are no demons, and it's just Deathmatch.’ I don't know what that has to do with [Doom] other than that, 'well, a couple of decades ago we had that, so we should just have that again.'”
Instead of coming up with the same multiplayer mode again, the developers have focuded on creating a 2v1 Battlemode where the DOOM Slayer will be pit against two other players who will control demons. With several demons to choose from and specific gameplay mechanics designed to make it quite challenging, this new multiplayer mode seems to be the appropriate formula to infuse new life to DOOM's multiplayer. On the other hand, it's a risky move, because Deathmatch mode has quite a lot of fans.
Despite the changes, the game aims to become a great success, and you will be able to check if it´s good enough for you very soon. DOOM Eternal will be available on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One tomorrow. Remember that you can pre-load it already if you have purchased it.
