Nexus Mods Faces Backlash After Banning Stellar Blade Mods

Since the PC release of Stellar Blade on June 11, 2025, the game’s modding community has experienced rapid growth. Within days, Nexus Mods hosted over 200 user-generated modifications, with approximately 41% categorized as adult content. The top 30 adult-rated mods collectively surpassed 350,000 downloads within just 24 hours.

This surge reflects the high level of community engagement, particularly in content that aligns with the game’s mature rating. Notably, Hyung-Tae Kim, CEO of Shift Up and director of Stellar Blade, has expressed open support for modding—including adult-themed creations—emphasizing the value of free, user-driven contributions.

However, the expanding mod scene has not been without controversy. Nexus Mods has recently begun enforcing stricter content policies, resulting in the removal of several modifications. One such example was a seemingly harmless “bare-legs” outfit swap for an in-game NPC. Although not explicit or offensive, the mod was still taken down for reportedly violating platform guidelines.

The removal sparked significant backlash from both creators and users, many of whom view the enforcement as unwarranted censorship. While Nexus Mods has historically acted against politically or racially sensitive content, the decision to moderate a non-controversial cosmetic mod has raised concerns about inconsistent policy application.

As a result, a growing number of modders have chosen to migrate to alternative platforms such as AyakaMods and DEGMods, where less restrictive policies are in place and previously banned content has been re-uploaded.

Prominent voices in the gaming community, including YouTuber Vara Dark, have criticized Nexus Mods for its approach, further amplifying the discourse around modding freedoms. Given that Denuvo’s DRM does not block graphical modifications, many interpret the situation as a policy-based dispute rather than a technical limitation, intensifying the debate over creative autonomy within the modding landscape.
