Dragon Age: The Veilguard did not meet EA's revenue expectations
Dragon Age: The Veilguard was released on October 31, 2024, to generally favorable reviews from critics and was expected to be the next big hit. However, it received a lukewarm reception from the gaming community.
EA has now announced that Dragon Age: The Veilguard failed to meet the company’s internal expectations. In its latest Q3 FY25 earnings report, EA revealed it is lowering its expectations for the fiscal year ending March 2025, shifting from a projected mid-single-digit growth to a mid-single-digit decline.
"Dragon Age: The Veilguard engaged approximately 1.5 million players during the quarter, down nearly 50% from the company’s expectations," EA said.
Due to unexpectedly low player engagement, EA now anticipates net bookings of approximately $2.215 billion for the third fiscal quarter, with an updated fiscal year forecast ranging from $7.000 billion to $7.150 billion.
EA Sports FC 25 is the main culprit
EA stated that the primary factor behind the underperformance was EA Sports FC 25, which experienced a slowdown in Q3 of the previous year after two consecutive fiscal years of double-digit net bookings growth.
“During Q3, we continued to deliver high-quality games and experiences across our portfolio; however, Dragon Age: The Veilguard and EA Sports FC 25 underperformed our net bookings expectations,” said Andrew Wilson, CEO of EA. “This month, our teams delivered a comprehensive gameplay refresh in addition to our annual Team of the Year update in EA Sports FC 25. Positive player feedback and early results are encouraging. We remain confident in our long-term strategy and expect a return to growth in EA Sports FC 26 as we execute against our pipeline.”
Dragon Age: The Veilguard's efforts to add more features and continuously improve the game appear to have not paid off as expected. However, it's important to note that selling 1.5 million copies isn’t necessarily a failure—many games have achieved success with even lower numbers. The issue lies in EA's overly ambitious sales targets.
Despite the financial setback, Dragon Age: The Veilguard maintains a mostly positive reception on Steam and boasts a solid 82 Metascore on Metacritic.
