Sucker Punch polishes Ghost of Yōtei for launch with a huge patch
The wait is over; Ghost of Yōtei, the highly anticipated follow-up to Ghost of Tsushima, officially launches today on PlayStation 5. But before players can set foot in its snowy landscapes, they'll need to download a sizeable day-one patch that Sony and Sucker Punch have deemed critical for the game’s performance and polish.
A launch built around the 1.006 Patch
Unlike some launches where the patch is optional, you must update your game to version 1.006 before you can play Ghost of Yōtei. Both physical and digital editions require the download before the game becomes playable. According to Sony, the patch includes no fewer than 79 individual fixes and improvements, making it one of the most comprehensive day-one updates in recent memory.
The changes span nearly every aspect of the game: graphics, stability, gameplay balance, environmental detail, audio corrections, and UI adjustments. For an open-world title of this scale, the patch is aimed at ensuring players encounter a stable and polished experience from the very first session.
Performance and Visual Enhancements
One of the most notable upgrades comes in the visual department. The patch improves environmental detail, including terrain erosion, snow blending, and cave interiors, while also addressing distracting issues like floating objects and asset "popping" in the distance. Tree models now display smoother transitions between detail levels, and hot spring areas (onsen) have received visual and interactive refinements.
Ray tracing also sees targeted improvements. Sony highlighted fixes to lighting and reflections in Ray Tracing Mode, which should result in more consistent rendering across various weather conditions and times of day. These changes are designed to make the snowy peaks of Mount Yōtei and its surrounding villages feel even more immersive.
Gameplay and Mechanics
On the gameplay side, Sucker Punch has fine-tuned the game's breathtaking combat and exploration. Weapon and charm balancing has been adjusted, particularly in late-game encounters and on Lethal difficulty. A range of bugs in mini-games, such as bamboo chopping and Zeni Hajiki, have been corrected to ensure smoother progression.
Camera behavior, which has been a recurring point of feedback in previews, has been refined, with smoother transitions during combat, tool usage, and exploration sequences. The patch also addresses mission flow interruptions, fixing issues where objectives could become blocked or navigation failed to update properly. Interestingly, one gameplay rule has been altered: players can no longer decapitate bounty targets, a change that may reflect balance or narrative considerations.
Stability and Audio Fixes
Beyond visual and gameplay updates, the patch improves overall stability. Reports of crashes when idling, loading, or after extended play sessions have been resolved. Performance during large-scale missions with many NPCs has also been optimized, reducing frame drops. Audio has been corrected in several areas, ensuring that weapon strikes and environmental sounds now match the materials they interact with, adding another layer of realism.
UI, Animations, and Cinematic Polish
The patch also addresses several immersion-breaking issues with the user interface and animations. Photomode has been polished, fixing problems with flash, brightness, and menu functionality. Map markers and loadout menus now display more reliably, while overlapping text and icon errors have been eliminated.
Cutscenes and character animations have also been touched up. Players should notice smoother transitions, improved facial expressions, and better synchronization between character movement and the environment, reducing instances of clipping or "floating" during cinematic sequences.
The hefty day-one patch reflects the challenges of launching large-scale open-world games in 2025, but it also shows Sucker Punch's commitment to delivering a polished experience. For players, it means a longer wait on launch day while the update downloads, but the payoff is a far more stable and visually impressive game.
As Ghost of Yotei arrives today, the day-one update ensures that players experience the samurai epic at its best. With its sweeping improvements, the game is set to deliver not only a new adventure but also a showcase of what the PS5 can achieve. Of course, you can use our comparator to purchase Ghost of Yōtei at the best price if you don't own the game yet.
