Pearl Abyss Explores Crimson Desert for Nintendo Switch 2

Crimson Desert could launch on Nintendo Switch 2 in the future

Crimson Desert, the action‑adventure RPG from South Korean developer Pearl Abyss, may be making its way to the Nintendo Switch 2. The company's CEO, Heo Jin‑young, confirmed in a recent shareholder meeting that research and development has officially begun on a potential port for the hybrid handheld‑home console.

Can Nintendo's console run it?

Since its launch earlier this year on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, macOS, and Windows, Crimson Desert has achieved remarkable commercial success, approaching five million copies sold worldwide. This strong performance appears to have motivated Pearl Abyss to investigate expanding the game to additional platforms, including Nintendo’s next-generation system.

Heo emphasized that the process is still in the early stages. "Our internal teams have begun looking into what it would take to bring Crimson Desert to Switch 2," he said. However, he also acknowledged the technical limitations of the console compared to high-end platforms, noting that compromises in graphics or performance may be necessary to make the port feasible.

Technical hurdles are a key consideration. Heo explained that "compared to other consoles, Switch 2 still has lower specifications, so there are parts we have to give up." Optimizing the game for the hybrid system will be essential to maintain an acceptable experience for players. Industry observers and fans have debated the feasibility of a Switch 2 version online, citing prior examples of ambitious ports on less powerful hardware while highlighting potential challenges in maintaining stable frame rates and visual fidelity.

The strong sales of Crimson Desert have fueled this expansion effort. Despite receiving mixed reviews at launch regarding gameplay and story elements, the title has demonstrated consistent market momentum, nearing a major milestone that positions it among Pearl Abyss's most successful releases. Bringing the game to Switch 2 could provide access to Nintendo's extensive install base and appeal to players who favor handheld or hybrid gameplay.

At this time, Pearl Abyss has not provided a release date for a Switch 2 version, and it is not guaranteed that the port will reach retail. The company frames the current work as a feasibility study, with any future decision dependent on technical assessments and market considerations.

For now, fans of Crimson Desert and Nintendo's next-generation console will need to wait for further announcements. If development proceeds, the project could become one of the most ambitious third-party releases yet for the Switch 2.
